Between Mother Nature, a Couple Unknowns and Keith Foster, Sunset Hills Country Club Has Been Shaped With an Eye for Detail and a Sensitivity to Its Natural Setting

Larry Packard designed the first nine holes in 1924. During the 1950's Packard and Brent Wadsworth collaborated on designing the original back nine. In 1990, Gary and Ron Kern designed six new holes that are now known as holes 10-15. In 1997, Keith Foster reworked what is now known as the front nine.

Finally — Keith Foster gets the credit he deserves!

Modernizing a course while maintaining a traditional “feel” to its playability takes an artisan. In 1997, renowned architect Keith Foster reworked the front nine, making needed improvements while maintaining a traditional feel for a round of golf.

Along with Sunset Hills, Mr. Foster has plied his skills in designing Gateway National and Meadowbrook, just to name a couple of his finer achievements.

Golf is my passion and livelihood. “Taking up the game at fifteen, I loved everything about it. Demanding both skill and discipline, I relished the challenge the game offered. In those youthful years, all I wanted was to play the game well. As I grew older, I could imagine nothing better than golf as a career. I spent eight years learning all aspects of golf course maintenance and construction first as an assistant, then superintendent. After securing a firm foundation in both areas, I began an association with a national design firm in 1986, responsible for the firm's West Coast expansion contributing on sixteen courses.

In 1991 I established my own design firm and five years later had a workload that required a staff of eight. Visiting many of the legendary courses in Great Britain and here in the States, inspired me to take a more critical look at my work, making the decision to reduce the size of my staff and limiting my workload to only three commissions per year."

“My aim is to produce timeless and enduring work.” Keith Foster
